Florida’s Atlantic Gag Grouper Harvest Closes August 2

Florida recreational anglers may no longer harvest gag grouper in Atlantic state waters beginning at 12:01 a.m. on August 2, under an FWC executive order.

Florida’s recreational gag grouper season in Atlantic state waters closes at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said. The closure also covers all state waters off Monroe County.

What changes

After the closure begins, recreational anglers may not harvest gag grouper in the affected state waters. FWC said the state closure aligns with the adjacent federal-water season.

The agency said the aligned seasons are intended to help end overfishing and rebuild the fishery while preserving future harvest opportunities.

Anglers should check the current FWC recreational grouper rules before a trip, including the waters where they plan to fish. Regulations can vary by coast and jurisdiction.
